Black and sepia poster, printed on paper 173cm H x 94cm W, printed by Clarke & Sherwell Ltd. The poster is one of a pair, both at Stowe House, this one is located in the Museum, the other can be seen on display in the Ante Library.
An opportunity which can never recur…This poster advertises the last great sale of the contents of Stowe House. Harry Shaw purchased the estate in 1921 from Lady Mary Morgan-Grenville, daughter of the last Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. Shaw wished to gift the house to the nation but lacked an endowment to offer alongside the house, so he sold it to the Martyrs Memorial Trust. In 1923, they established Stowe School, which still operates at Stowe today.
One of the auctioneers, Messrs. Jackson Stops, remains a prominent firm in nearby Northamptonshire. The poster’s printers, Clarke & Sherwell Ltd, were also a well-known Northamptonshire company. While no longer in business, their posters are held in museum collections worldwide.
Though Stowe House now lies in Buckinghamshire, our Seeley guidebooks dating back from the 1740s show shifting county boundaries.
This tin can, 10.8cm tall, diameter 4.9cm, was discovered in the 1960s during the demolition of a row of houses in Burton Latimer called Wallis’s or Maycock’s Yard.
